Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld is a DC comic series from the 1980's. It tells the tale of Amy Winston, a thirteen year old girl who recieves an amethyst pendant that allows her to create portals to and from an alternate dimension known as the Gemworld. Though on Earth, she is still a normal kid, when she steps through the portal she is transformed into a twenty year old woman with incredible powers, and is hailed as Gemworld's princess and savior. It doesn't take long for Amy to master her powers, but there is more to her new life than knowing a little magic. To return forever to Earth, as she wishes, Amy must defeat the evil king who has taken her rightful place on the throne.
Why you should read itEditDespite being an American series and marketed as a superhero and not a magical girl, Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld is a very typical magical girl story, filled with power and fun. The series later takes a darker turn and switches target audiences (from young girls to older teens and adults), but the change flows nicely and fans of dark or light series can enjoy it very much.
- The majority of the series is available in an extremely large trade paperback for $20 USD.
- Amethyst has two more modern continuities- the Amethyst: Princess of Gemworld TV shorts series, and the Sword of Sorcery comics.
